Sixteenth Century Soft-sided Book

This soft sided binding is based off of Apuleius Metamorphoseos printed in 1521 by Aldine Press that resides in the San Francisco Library's Grabhorn collection.

The original is a limp binding sewn on alum tawed straps of twisted leather that were then sewn into the parchment cover.

I have changed the actual sewing technique (the codex uses a packed sewing stitch over a twisted leather strip) to a simpler contemporary because this method is nearly impossible to do without a sewing frame to stabilize the leather. For this reason and because of time constraints, (this was originally taught at a Collegium so I had 90 minutes to teach this technique) I am also omitting the end bands.
